Birmingham City goalkeeper Connal Trueman has revealed the advice given to him by Lee Camp, ahead of the Blues' 1-1 draw with Huddersfield Town at the weekend.

The 23-year-old goalkeeper made his first appearance for the Blues in over a year at the John Smith's Stadium on Saturday afternoon - replacing Camp, who was dropped to the bench after some questionable displays in recent weeks.

Even though he failed to keep a clean sheet, Trueman still produced an assured display on his return to the side and pulled off a couple of impressive saves in the first half.

Camp had started every league game for the Blues this season, but the experienced goalkeeper lost his place in the side at the weekend to Trueman, after making a number of mistakes in recent games.

This didn't stop Camp giving some advice to Trueman before the game on Saturday though. Speaking to BirminghamLive, Trueman has heaped praise on Camp and revealed what he said to him before the game.

“He’s a great guy Campy. He’s been top class since he came to the club and he has helped me. I have learned a lot from him. It could have been a difficult one for him on Saturday but he was first class in his approach and his attitude - especially with me - and I appreciate that a lot.

“He said to relax and enjoy it, he said ‘You are good enough to play, relax, you deserve to be out there, go and do what you do’. It would have been easy for him not to have been that way, it does mean a lot and says a lot about him as a character and a person and I really appreciate that.”

The Verdict

This is a touch of class from Camp. The goalkeeper has really struggled in recent weeks and he's come in for some criticism from Birmingham fans.

Losing his place in the side at the weekend would have been a bit of a difficult one for him to take and given the circumstances, he easily could have said nothing. The fact that he was still willing to help Trueman says a lot about his character and how he is as a person.

Even though he couldn't keep a clean sheet, Truman still produced a good performance at the weekend and that should give him a bit of a confidence boost. It'll be interesting if he did enough to keep his place in the team for the next game.
