Southampton have secured the services of Birmingham City youngster Ramello Mitchell, beating a host of others clubs to his signature.

The Saints announced the capture on their official club website, reportedly beating a host of other Premier League clubs to his signature. It was believed earlier in the season that both Manchester United and Liverpool had been 'blown away' by the 16-year-old, who goes straight into the Saints academy for the coming season.

Wolves were also thought to be interested in the prolific striker's services, with Leeds and Manchester City even credited with tracking him. However, it's Southampton who have won the chase and Mitchell told their official club site how delighted he was to bag the move.

“I’m really pleased. It's a lovely club. I want to try my best here and do what I can do," he said.

“Ever since I was young I've always wanted to play football. I haven't had another focus, it's my dream. Straight away, when I looked at the club there was a friendly feeling. It seemed like the right place for me to progress as a footballer, and go on with my journey.

“The club have produced world class players; players who you aspire to be like. I really believe I could be one of those players."

It was reported back in April that the initial deal could set Southampton back £300,000, with that set to rise to £1m with add-ons and bonuses.

The Verdict

This is a name I expect to be hearing again in the not-so-distant future. Mitchell has been hot property for a while now, attracting interest from across the top flight and Championship.

He's in good hands at Southampton, they've had a great track record producing players in the past with Theo Walcott and Gareth Bale the two that jump out immediately. Even as far back as the nineties, they brought the likes of Matt Le Tissier and Alan Shearer through.

It's a great club with a strong emphasis on youth development and the youngster will be hoping he can add his name to the list of exciting world-class talent emerging on the south coast.

As for Birmingham, they'll be sore at losing such a young talent but at least they'll be compensated in some way.
