Birmingham City have had some memorable days over the years and one that will always stand out for the fans was the play-off final victory against Norwich City in 2002.

Steve Bruce's side had overcome two tough games against Millwall to reach the final and they were pushed all the way by the Canaries at Cardiff, with the two sides level after 120 minutes.

That meant promotion to the Premier League would be decided by a penalty shootout and it was Blues who were victorious, with 18-year-old Darren Carter famously scoring the decisive kick.

And, with the Championship side reliving that game on their social media today, they got in touch with Carter who explained the emotions he went through for what was the biggest fixture of his career.

It was a huge relief to be involved, to know that I could play a part. Once we got near the ground it was a sea of blue. It seemed like it was blue everywhere.

To run out on the pitch, it was like a cauldron atmosphere, a drone of noise all the way through and I just remember trying to take it in. I was just full of adrenaline and excitement, no nerves.”

The win ended a 16-year stay outside the top-flight for Birmingham City.

The verdict

This was a great day for Carter and Blues, so it will be good for the fans to look back at it on Twitter.

The player has given a good insight into what the day was like and the fans clearly made a big difference as they packed out the Welsh capital and supported the team in what was a massive game.

Along with the League Cup final win and a few trips to Europe, this will surely be one of the best days out Blues have had in the past 20 years.
