According to the Chronicle Live, Newcastle United have offered Grant Hanley to Birmingham City, with the Sky Bet Championship club considering a move for the defender.

Hanley only arrived at St James’ Park 12-months ago, but after finding opportunities limited following his £5.6m move from Blackburn Rovers, he looks set to end a short spell in Newcastle.

The Scottish international made just ten appearances in the Championship last season, with only five of those coming in the starting XI.

Rafa Benitez preferred Jamaal Lascelles and Ciaran Clark for large parts of the season, before Chancel Mbemba also worked his way ahead of Hanley in the pecking order.

The 25-year-old’s last appearance came on April 17th in a 3-1 defeat to Ipswich Town, with Benitez not playing Hanley during the Championship run-in, which concluded with Newcastle winning the title.

Birmingham have now been offered the chance to sign Hanley from Newcastle, with the defender available for transfer, if the two clubs can reach an agreement over a transfer-fee.

Harry Redknapp is keen to bolster his Birmingham squad ahead of the 2017/18 campaign, but after making just three signings this summer, the 70-year-old is cutting a frustrated figure.

David Stockdale has been Birmingham’s standout addition, with Marc Roberts and Cheikh N’Doye other new faces at St Andrew’s.

Birmingham begin their Championship campaign with a trip to Ipswich Town on Saturday.

The Verdict

Hanley would be an excellent addition for any club in the Championship, despite him finding his opportunities limited with Newcastle last season.

Prior to his spell at St James’ Park, the defender impressed for Blackburn Rovers, and was unlucky to find himself behind such talented players in the North East.

Alongside Roberts in the heart of Birmingham’s defence, with an experienced goalkeeper like Stockdale behind them, Redknapp’s side would have a very solid base to work from next season.
