Birmingham City took a major step towards survival with a 2-1 victory over Sheffield United on Saturday, which leaves them five points clear of the relegation zone.

Garry Monk's men delivered a strong performance to come back from a goal down and secure a much-needed three points. And, with rivals Barnsley and Bolton losing, it made it a fine weekend for Blues.

Yet, there's still work to be done, with the Tykes having a game in hand - against Nottingham Forest tomorrow, which could drag the West Midlands side back into a battle.

However, survival looks probable and Monk will deserve a lot of credit for that. He has changed the mentality in the group and encouraged a more attacking, forward-thinking approach on the pitch.

Therefore, it promises to be an exciting summer for Blues fans should they preserve their status in the second tier and here we look at three players that Monk should be targeting this summer...

The Spanish playmaker is out of contract at Elland Road this summer and Leeds boss Paul Heckingbottom has admitted there is interest in the player.

Monk knows Hernandez extremely well and his quality performances for the Whites this season won't have gone unnoticed.

The 32-year old has real class on the ball and would provide Blues with a creative outlet in the final third that they often lack.

Another favourite of Monk is Kyle Bartley.

He took the centre-back to Leeds last season and made him captain immediately. He responded with superb performances as they nearly made the play-offs.

Blues have decent options in the middle of their defence, but Bartley is an upgrade and Monk could be pivotal to bringing in the out-of-favour Swansea man to the club over others.

A final raid on his former clubs should see Monk turn to Swansea's McBurnie.

He was in charge of the Welsh side when the striker joined and will know all about his talents.

The Scotland international has been superb for Barnsley and is clearly a capable goal scorer at this level. Given Blues struggles in that department, they ought to be one of the many Championship clubs chasing the 21-year old.
