Having snapped up Sam Gallagher on loan from Southampton last week, it appears that Harry Redknapp’s surge for attacking reinforcements has not reached its conclusion just yet, with top target Jordan Hugill handing in a transfer request at Preston, according to Sky Sports reports.

The 25-year-old enjoyed a solid season with the Lilywhites last year, scoring 12 times in the league, and has been attracting interest from rival clubs since the window opened in June.

Before last season, Hugill had seriously struggled at Deepdale, and had been sent out on loan to League Two and National League clubs, as he struggled to adapt to the demands of football at a higher level.

However, in just a single season, Hugill became the name on everybody's lips, and has now taken things to a whole new level in his attempt to force a move.

Birmingham appears to be the most likely destination for the player, but Redknapp should seriously consider whether the former non-league striker is the right man to lead the line at St Andrews.

Redknapp’s ultimate ambition is to lead this club to the Premier League, but Hugill has not done enough to suggest that he is capable and consistent enough to guide a club into the top six.

If he can surpass the total he reached at Preston last year then he will be considered a success, but with the fee Preston will demand for his services yet to be revealed, Redknapp may be forced to pay over the odds for the player.

Such is the nature of football that a player’s value can skyrocket following just a single solid season, and Hugill still has a lot to prove at this level.

Had Hugill stayed at Preston this year, which he still may do, and emulated his efforts of last season, then he could certainly be considered one of the better forwards in the division.

However Redknapp should be wary of a move and the potential of paying a premium, as Birmingham fans have grown accustomed to big money strikers failing to make the grade at St Andrews.
