Birmingham City forward Isaac Vassell has expressed his delight at finding the back of the net on Wednesday evening against Sheffield Wednesday, telling the club’s official site that he was ‘buzzing’ to grab the winning goal.

The summer signing from Luton Town came off the bench to secure the points for the home side, which marks caretaker boss Lee Carsley’s first win since taking over the role from Harry Redknapp on a temporary basis.

The Blues had not won for well over a month, and the result will have come as a relief to all of those watching at St Andrew’s.

The home side battled well against an Owl's side fresh off the back of a devastating derby defeat to Sheffield United, with Portuguese manager Carlos Carvalhal under a lot of pressure following back-to-back defeats.

Vassell, who began his career with Plymouth, spent time in non-league football before being picked up by the Hatters in 2016, and it appears he has a bright future with the Blues.

A spot in the starting XI could be on the cards this Saturday following his decisive goal, when the Blues travel to Hull City.

The Verdict

Vassell has been made to bide his time since heading to Birmingham in the summer, but really announced himself to fans last night with his late winner.

The result was a much-needed lift to a club still reeling from the shock departure of Redknapp, and fans will now be calling for Lee Carsley to be offered the role on a permanent basis, having picked up four points from his first two games.

Vassell will hope to get the nod against the Tigers at the weekend, and must continue his form fine if he wants a place in the starting XI, with Jota and Che Adams expected to return after the international break.
