David Stockdale has taken to Twitter to issue an apology to Birmingham City’s supporters, after the Blues’ crushing defeat to Brentford in the Sky Bet Championship last night.

The former Brighton and Hove Albion goalkeeper saw five goals fly past him, as Birmingham suffered a humiliating 5-0 defeat at Griffin Park, which hurled Steve Cotterill’s side back into the relegation fight in the Championship.

Ollie Watkins (x2), Neil Maupay and Florian Jozefzoon all fired past Stockdale, who was also beaten by a Marc Roberts own-goal, on a hugely disappointing evening for Birmingham and Cotterill.

The 32-year-old took to his personal Twitter account to deliver a message following Birmingham’s humiliation, accepting that his performance wasn’t good enough and issuing an apology to everyone associated with the St Andrew’s club.

Last night’s 5-0 defeat leaves Birmingham 20th in the Championship table, two places above the relegation zone.

However, Burton Albion’s victory over Barnsley piled the pressure on Birmingham, with Cotterill’s side just a single point above the drop zone heading into the final 13 fixtures of the season.

Birmingham are back in action on Saturday, facing another relegation contender in Barnsley.

The Verdict

Stockdale is right to take to social media to apologise for last night’s result, as Birmingham were shocking at Griffin Park.

Birmingham have serious problems, which has left them fighting relegation once again in the Championship.

Cotterill needs an instant reaction from his side, and it has to come against Barnsley on Saturday.
