Birmingham City are weighing up a loan bid for Bournemouth winger Connor Mahoney, according to reports from Birmingham Live.

21-year old Mahoney came through the ranks at Blackburn Rovers, but left Ewood Park following Rovers’ relegation to League One, opting to join top-flight Bournemouth.

Mahoney, who has England U17, U18 and U20 honours, has played just twice for the Cherries, both outings coming in the League Cup.

The talented winger spent time on loan at Barnsley during the second half of last season, but he made just eight appearances for the Tykes as they suffered relegation to League One, just as his Blackburn side had twelve months previous.

Birmingham boss Garry Monk has been permitted to make signings in the dying embers of the transfer window, with the EFL allowed the club to sign players under severe restrictions. He is reported as eyeing moves for a midfielder, a goalkeeper and a winger in the next few days.

The Verdict

Relegations from the Championship in successive seasons, both with sides beginning with 'B'. That surely doesn't bode well for Birmingham City if things truly do come in threes.

Joking aside, Mahoney is an exciting player who fits the bill for Garry Monk in that he is allowed within the current restrictions. Would he be targeting the former Accrington man if he weren't working with tied hands? Maybe not, but he will certainly add value to a depleted squad at this moment in time.
