Birmingham City have reportedly registered their interest in signing midfielder Adam Clayton on a free transfer according to Football Insider.

Clayton has been a free-agent since leaving Middlesbrough in the summer, after making 30 appearances in all competitions for Boro.

It was a frustrating season for Clayton, as Middlesbrough struggled for a positive run of results in the Championship under the management of Jonathan Woodgate and Neil Warnock.

They eventually finished 17th in the second-tier standings, with Clayton not signing a new deal with the club upon the expiration of his contract.

A move to Birmingham could see him link up with Aitor Karanka again, with the Spaniard previously working with Clayton at Middlesbrough in the past.

Birmingham will be looking to add to their squad before the new season gets under way, with the Blues finishing 20th in the Championship table.

They didn't win a single match since returning to competitive action, after off-the-field events had previously called a temporary halt to fixtures across the country.

Clayton is believed to have entered talks with Birmingham over a potential agreement, although it remains to be seen as to how close they are to completing a deal at this moment in time.

The Verdict:

I like the sound of this potential deal.

Birmingham still have a relatively young squad, and I certainly feel as though they could benefit from signing some experienced players heading into the new season.

Clayton fits that description well having played for the likes of Leeds United and Middlesbrough in the Championship earlier in his career.

I think he'd be more than capable of challenging for a starting spot in Aitor Karanka's team, and it'll be interesting to see if any other teams are to register their interest in his services with the new league campaign edging closer to getting under way.
