Birmingham City defender David Edgar has joined Huddersfield Town on loan until the end of the season, the club have confirmed.

The Canadian international will stay at the John Smith's Stadium until the end of the Championship season and will wear the number two shirt.

The 27-year-old, who can can play across the back four as well as in midfielder, joined Birmingham last summer and has made 19 appearances for the Blues this campaign.

Edgar started his career at Newcastle United having moved to England from Canada at the age of 14 to join the club's academy.

He progressed through the youth ranks at St James' Park to make his debut for the Magpies in a fixture against Bolton Wanderers on Boxing Day 2006.

The Canadian made 23 appearances in four years for Newcastle but left to join Burnley in the summer of 2009 for £300,000.

Edgar played 114 times for Burnley in five seasons at Turf Moor, including 17 appearances in the squad that won promotion to the Premier League last season.

He also had a brief loan spell at Swansea City in March 2010.

Edgar was one of four players released by Burnley following promotion to the top-flight but he was snapped up by Birmingham, signing a two-year deal.

Huddersfield boss Chris Powell told the club's official website:

“He’s a very capable player in a number of defensive positions, having played during his career at centre back; right back; left back and in a holding midfield role in the top two divisions in England.

"David also has a well-earned reputation as a leader and organiser on the pitch, which will be of great benefit to the team.

"I'm looking forward to working with him during the second half of the current season, when I'm sure he will play a big role for us."

The Terriers sit 17th in the Championship and travel to face struggling Wigan Athletic on Saturday.
