Birmingham City have been handed a significant blow with midfielder Maikel Kieftenbeld facing a lengthy period out with an injury.

The club confirmed on Monday night that the 28-year-old will be out for between six and nine months after damaging his anterior cruciate ligament in the win against Leeds United on Saturday.

After a clash with Kalvin Phillips in the middle of the pitch on the hour mark, Kieftenbeld required lengthy treatment before eventually being stretchered off.

The Dutchman’s deal with the club was set to expire in the summer of 2020, but they have now confirmed that they will be taking up the option of an extension following this latest set-back.

He has played 163 times for the Blues since signing from Dutch side Groningen back in July 2015, becoming a key member of Garry Monk’s squad.

Saturday’s win looks set to be a big one in the club’s fight against relegation, keeping them five points clear of the drop zone.

The verdict

This is really gutting for club and player.

Kieftenbeld’s role in the Birmingham side is crucial, holding the midfield together and linking the defence and attack impressively.

Losing him for potentially nine months gives Monk a lot to think about, both immediately and in the summer too.
