Having already secured the services of nine new players this summer, Birmingham City boss Pep Clotet could be about to swoop once again.

According to Football Insider, the Blues are reportedly lining up a last-gasp move Burnley striker Nahki Wells who has been made surplus to requirements by the Premier League side this summer.

Queens Park Rangers are also thought to be monitoring the forward's situation at Turf Moor (via Football Insider).

Wells, who spent the 2018/19 campaign on loan with the Hoops, was directly involved in 13 goals in the Championship last season as he helped the London-based outfit avoid relegation to the third-tier.

Although Birmingham bolstered their attacking options by signing forward Alvaro Gimenez from Spanish side Almeria earlier this week, Clotet is keen to add to his strike-force following Che Adams' departure to Southampton in July.

Wells is no stranger to the second-tier having represented Queens Park Rangers and Huddersfield Town in this particular division.

The Verdict

If Birmingham can get a deal over the line for Wells later today, it could prove to be a shrewd bit of business by Clotet.

With 184 Championship appearances under his belt, the Bermudan international knows exactly what it takes to thrive at this level and thus would be confident in his abilities to fire the Blues to a higher finish than they achieved during the previous campaign.

Although Gimenez and Lukas Jutkiewicz will unquestionably provide Wells with stiff competition for a place in Clotet's starting eleven, there is no reason why Birmingham cannot reap the benefits of having three strikers who are capable of producing the goods.

The only stumbling block for the Blues could be the Burnley man's wages as according to Spotrac, he is currently earning £25,000-per-week at Turf Moor which is a figure that Clotet's side may not be able to match given their recent financial issues.
