Birmingham City have confirmed via their official website that forward Isaac Vassell has had successful knee surgery.

Vassell, who ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament during the 0-0 draw with Aston Villa last month, is set to be sidelined for a minimum of six months, in what will come as a huge blow to the struggling Blues.

The 24-year-old linked up with the St Andrews’ outfit in the summer after signing for an undisclosed fee from League Two side Luton Town, and had looked sharp at this level despite plying his trade in the fourth tier the year before.

Manager Steve Cotterill said: “We’re delighted the operation has gone well, he’s been treated by a top specialist.”

"Now the process starts for Isaac's rehabilitation and he will get the best possible care and attention from our medical and sports science department.”

The Verdict

If Cotterill didn’t think things could get much worse for his side, Vassell’s injury will certainly have made him guess again.

The Blues have looked woeful this season, and the 24-year-old’s long-term lay-off will come as a huge blow as the West Midlands side struggle to pull away from the relegation zone.

There needs to be a huge turnaround if the club are to avoid the drop, but Cotterill will have to do it without his tricky forward.
