Birmingham City have completed the signing of midfielder Bernard Sun on a free transfer, the club has confirmed.

Sun has put pen to paper on a two-year contract at St Andrew's after leaving Spanish side Estudiantes de Murcia over the summer to become a free agent.

The 20-year-old trained with the Blues' Under-23 side over the summer which led to him featuring in a friendly match against Olympiacos, and he has now joined on a permanent deal.

The Shanghai-born midfielder moved to Germany when he was seven and started his youth career with Kaiserslauten before making the switch Eisbachtal.

He then went to Spain where he signed for Jumilla and has featured for their reserve side Estudiantes de Murcia since 2017, but he did temporarily join Gimnastic on loan in January.

Sun has become the 11th signing in a busy transfer window for the Midlands outfit, with the likes Alvaro Gimenez, Ivan Sunjic and Jake Clarke-Salter also joining Pep Clotet's side.

The verdict

This is not a signing that will instantly excite many Birmingham fans, as Sun is not someone many English football fans will likely be aware of.

However, the China Under-18 international is still very young at 20 years old and could develop into a good player for Clotet's side, while the fact he has already been training with the Blues means they have had time to assess his abilities.

I can't see Sun making an immediate impact on the first-team side, particularly as Birmingham already have a plentiful supply of midfielders, but he could start off with the Under-23 side before working his way up.

Birmingham fans should reserve judgement on this signing as Sun has clearly impressed Birmingham coaches during his time at the club, while he also offers versatile presence with his ability to play in both midfield and attack.
