Barnsley defender Marc Roberts is on the verge of sealing a move to Birmingham City, according to a report by The Birmingham Mail.

The Birmingham Mail understands that the deal could be completed as soon as later today.

Marc Roberts is an in-demand defender who has been a key man in Barnsley's defence.

After losing Alfie Mawson, the former Halifax man really stepped up and has turned in some fine performances in the second tier, helping Barnsley finish in a respectable mid-table position.

The physical centre-back was handed the captaincy at Oakwell in January after then-skipper Conor Hourihane departed the club to join Aston Villa.

Now it looks like Barnsley will be searching for another captain again with Roberts set to exit.

The Tykes have already signed Partick Thistle defender Liam Lindsay, who was named in the Scottish Premiership team of the season for 2016/17.

The young Scotsman could be seen as the long-term successor at centre-half with Roberts set to leave.

Roberts looks likely to team up with Harry Redknapp at Birmingham City despite interest from Premier League side Burnley.

With one year left on his Barnsley contract, the 26-year-old is set to move for around £5m.

Birmingham have been busy in the summer transfer window and Roberts could be the latest signing as Redknapp continues to bolster his squad for next year.
