Birmingham City are closing in on their first signing of the January transfer window, according to manager Garry Monk

Due to EFL restrictions, the Blues are only able to bring in one more player this month so Monk will be keen to get it right and says he will only bring a player in that will significantly help them.

"We are working, we are down the line with one particular target, but I won't talk about because that's still in discussions," he told his pre-match press conference.

"We all know the restrictions we have, we have one opportunity left to bring somebody in under certain restrictions.

"It will only be someone who can help strengthen the squad. It will be a big, big help for the squad."

In the summer, Kristian Pedersen was the only player to arrive at the club for a fee. Lee Camp arrived on a free transfer whilst Omar Bogle, Connor Mahoney and Gary Gardner all arrived on loan.

The Blues travel to high-flying Norwich City tonight as they look to bounce back to winning ways and continue their push for a surprise top-six place.

Monk currently has his side sat in eighth place with 27 matches played, four points behind Derby County who occupy the final play-off place.

The verdict

This may not be a bad thing for the Blues.

Monk has built great success at the club this season through a remarkable team spirit so the arrival of loads of players could well have upset that.

Bringing in one quality signing could be just what they need.
