Birmingham City have been linked with Bulgarian international goalkeeper Nikolay Mihaylov, according to reports from Bulgaria.

The former Liverpool keeper is without a club at present and as a free agent, can sign for the Blues despite the window closing.

They're still in the market for a keeper after freezing out David Stockdale and Tomasz Kuszczak. Lee Camp joined as competition for young Connal Trueman, but Garry Monk is clearly still hoping to bring in an additional stopper.

Mihaylov spent three years at Anfield between 2007 and 2010, but failed to make a first team appearance. At the time of his arrival from Levski Sofia, he described the move as the best moment of his life.

He eventually found first team football in the Eredivisie with FC Twente, first joining on loan before securing a £1.5m permanent switch. He quickly established himself as their first team keeper, making 82 appearances in total.

Since leaving Twente his carer has nosedived, with spells at Hellas Verona, Mersin İdmanyurdu of Turkey and Omonia Nicosia in Greece all failing to bring regular football.

The Verdict

Birmingham do need a new keeper. Lee Camp has never impressed me and is perhaps adequate back up, but the Blues need a stopper they can rely on.

The Bulgarian hasn't had the best of careers, lots of his football has been watched from the bench, but he does have 33 international caps and European experience. He could be just what Birmingham need to stem the flow of goals this season.
