Birmingham City boss Steve Cotterill has confirmed that Everton loanee Liam Walsh has returned to the Toffees, in an interview with the club’s official website.

The 20-year-old had not featured for the Blues since a mid-September defeat to Preston North End, and had made just three senior appearances for the club since his deadline-day move from Everton.

Walsh had been set to stay with the club until January, but with a number of options already available to Cotterill in the middle of the park, the new boss made the tough decision to inform Walsh that he was no longer required at St Andrews.

“Liam Walsh has gone back to Everton,” Cotterill confirmed. “He wasn’t going to be ahead of the players already in there (central midfield).”

“He can go back but he will still be available for us if all of a sudden we’re at a stage where we need someone to play.”

“I’ve got nothing but good things to say about him.”

The Verdict

Unfortunately for Walsh and Birmingham, the youngster’s loan move to St Andrews just hasn’t worked out, and the player made the decision that he would rather play in the reserve side at Everton than with the Blues’ second team.

Having seen fellow academy graduate Kieran Dowell do so well at Nottingham Forest, Walsh will be disappointment his move has failed to deliver, but will return to Everton a much-improved player following the experience.

Walsh still has a bright future and a lot to learn, and must now get his head down in the reserve side at Everton before perhaps considering another loan switch in January to a more suitable destination.
