Birmingham City boss Gary Rowett believes the loan signing of Watford forward Diego Fabbrini, on the final day of the emergency loan window, will provide a big boost for his squad.

Rowett is happy to have signed Fabbrini

Rowett revealed he had been looking at the Watford man whilst he was on loan at Sky Bet Championship rivals Millwall.

The former Burton Albion boss told the Birmingham City official website,  ''Diego was a player that I was aware of earlier on in the season, he really came to prominence when he played against us for Millwall and I thought he was very good in the number ten roll. We’ve watched him since for Millwall and he’s been really impressive.''

The former Burton Albion manager also answered the critics who questioned bringing in Fabbrini and the effectiveness he would have with only seven games remaining.

''We just wanted someone as an additional player alongside Andy Shinnie that can play in that role specifically, rather than trying to fit someone else in there - like trying to accommodate one of the strikers.''

Rowett also believes Fabbrini is a player that can get fans on the edge of their seats and provide lots of quality for his side. ''I think he’s the sort of player that fans will want to come and watch at this stage of the season. If we can get someone in like that that can just give us a little bit of a spark and a little bit of a lift in a few of those games then we will.''

With two games against Rotherham United away and AFC Bournemouth at home, Fabbrini will be eager to show to the Blues faithful that he was a worthwhile signing and increase the possibility of signing a permanent deal in the summer.
