Birmingham City and Wolves finalise transfer agreement

Birmingham City have completed the loan signing of Dion Sanderson from Wolverhampton Wanderers. The talented centre-back joins the Blues after a successful temporary spell with Sunderland last campaign.

Sanderson, now 21, was linked with a number of clubs but has opted for a short trip from Wolverhampton to Birmingham. He will stay at St Andrew’s for the entirety of the 2021/22 season, having also agreed a long-term contract with his parent-club.

Blues latest signing had this to say on BluesTV: “I am delighted and so excited. Once I heard the news. I couldn’t wait to get it done. As soon as I came in today, I have just had a big smile on my face. It’s unbelievable to be here.

“I’m a quick centre-half that likes to play football, technically I think I am very good, but I am aggressive as well and don’t like to give strikers any chances.”

Sanderson spell in Birmingham will be the third time he has departed Wolves on loan in as many seasons. Firstly he spent six months at Cardiff City, joining in January 2020 and making ten appearances for The Bluebirds.

But last season’s switch to Sunderland was where his young career really took off. Up in the North East, the fans really took to the young centre back where he won the Young Player of the Year award. He played 27 games for them but would most likely have been more had he not been injured at the end of the season, as Sunderland’s promotion hopes were ended by Lincoln City.

The Verdict

With so much interest in the young defender, the signing of Sanderson well be seen as something of a coup for Birmingham City supporters.

Due to his form for Sunderland last season, he was deserving of a move to the Championship after excelling in League One. You could see this turning out to be a very exciting signing for Blues.
