Birmingham City and QPR appear to be two of the sides in the race to sign full-back Alberto Redondo who is currently a free agent having been released by La Liga club Getafe.

Foot Mercato have reported the news that includes interest from Nimes and Brest for the 22-year-old.

Redondo made just one appearance for Getafe last season and club's in England can still sign players that are available on a free transfer.

He's predominantly a left-back and has played for Getafe his entire career.

Speaking to Birmingham Live, Blues manager, Pep Clotet, confirmed that the club would be looking in that particular market.

He said: "As with every other club, any player without a contract now is available to bring him out of the transfer window then, obviously, you'd bring [a player] into consideration."

Birmingham take on Barnsley this Tuesday night looking to bounce back from a 3-0 defeat at Nottingham Forest. QPR meanwhile, host Swansea in a bid to get their first victory since the opening day.

The Verdict

Both sides need improvements. They suffered humbling defeats on the weekend, Blues at Forest and QPR at the Robins. It'll be interesting to see if Redondo is the only free agent being looked at by either team.

If the left-back had a choice, it would look like he would pick Birmingham judging by the teams' recent signings. Clotet's side has already signed a Valencia midfielder on loan as well as last season's La Liga 2nd division top scorer.

QPR aren't at the point where they need to take risks on free agents. So often the signings don't turn out being able to cope with the Championship's demands and until you're really struggling it's not worth the risk.

However, Redondo has played with top players at Getafe and would have some potential despite still being young. You only have to see that more than one club wants him, so he must have something about him.
