Aston Villa claimed the bragging rights in Birmingham this weekend when they shrugged off the challenge of relegation threatened rivals Birmingham City to win the Second City derby 1-0 at Villa Park.

Gabby Agbonlahor's sharp finish in the 68th minute was enough to claim victory for the Villains and leave Birmingham in all sorts of trouble at the bottom of the league.

After just 2 wins in 24 games under Gianfranco Zola, Birmingham were left in danger of dropping down to League One.

Harry Redknapp was brought in last week, tasked with keeping the Blues afloat but could not inspire a point in the local rivalry.

This loss leaves the Blues just two points off the drop zone with two games to play, and with inferior goal difference.

However, despite the precarious situation, Redknapp was encouraged by the display, praising the side's attitude and effort.

The former West Ham, Spurs and QPR manager went on to add that he is more confident now than when he took over.

Redknapp said:

"I take a lot of encouragement from that [display].

"The attitude has been terrific all week; everything we asked them to do in training they have done today.

"Would they be able to carry that on to the pitch with them?

"I thought they did.

"They worked their socks off, I can't ask for more from them.

"They gave absolutely everything.

"I feel a lot more confident than when I walked in on Monday.

"I looked at the record - two wins in 24 - and I thought, 'My God, we need a miracle'.

"Don't get me wrong, I know it will still be tough but I was really pleased with them today.

"Huddersfield next week is a massive game and we have to make sure St Andrew's is rocking.

"I hope the fans are pleased with what they saw today.

"The result isn't what we wanted but they can't fault the effort.

"I can't fault the effort."
