New West Brom manager Slaven Bilic will quickly be coming to terms with the task ahead of him at the Hawthorns, with finding a replacement for the goals supplied by Dwight Gayle last season a priority.

One player Bilic is considering is Bristol City striker Famara Diedhiou, who is also the subject of interest from Cardiff City and Huddersfield Town, as reported on Get French Football News.

But would Diedhiou be a suitable replacement for Gayle at West Brom?

We discuss……..

George Dagless

“He’d be a good signing but he’s not at Gayle’s level.

“Diedhiou still has a bit to prove by my reckoning at this level of football whereas Gayle guarantees you goals in the second tier of English football.

“I like Diedhiou for what he does bring but to compare the two is a little harsh on him – few could do what Gayle does in the Championship.

“In isolation, it would be a good signing but I don’t think Baggies fans could expect the same return as they got with Gayle.”

George Brooks

“Diedhiou is a good player and he has all the attributes to succeed as a striker in the Championship, but I don’t think he’d be a suitable replacement for Gayle.

“West Brom will be expected to challenge for automatic promotion next season and they need a striker who is capable of scoring goals week in, week out.

“Diedhiou has a decent goalscoring record for Bristol City, but I don’t think he’s consistent enough to play for one of the top teams in the league.

“Gayle was outstanding for West Brom last season and was one of the most prolific goalscorers outside of the top flight. It’s going to be very difficult for Albion to replace him, but there are surely better options out there than Diedhiou.”

Jacob Potter

“It would be a gamble, but it could pay off if he hits the ground running.

“Gayle left a sizeable void in attack for West Brom when he returned to Newcastle from his loan spell at The Hawthorns.

“The Magpies striker scored 24 goals last season for the Baggies, and Diedhiou could be a suitable replacement for him in the future.

“The 27-year-old scored 13 league goals for Bristol City last season and you feel that he could thrive in a tea with the creative talent that West Brom have.

“Obviously, the Baggies would prefer to have Gayle back, but if they’re looking for a striker that could fire them back into the Premier League, then Diedhiou could certainly be the man to do just that.”
