Besiktas are set to make a €2.5million offer to West Brom for Matt Phillips, Turkish outlet Fanatik have reported.

The Turkish side are in thought to be in the market for wingers in the current transfer window ahead of the expected departures of Ricardo Quaresma and Jeremain Lens, and Phillips is said to have emerged as an option for the Istanbul based club.

Phillips has made 96 appearances and scored 13 goals in all competitions for the Baggies since joining from QPR in the summer of 2016, although reports from Turkey claim that he is unlikely to get many opportunities under the newly appointed Slaven Bilic at the Hawthorns next season.

It is also thought that Phillips himself is open to exploring a new chapter in his career, which could further encourage Besiktas to make their move.

Despite speculation around a number of first-team players since the end of the season, only Craig Dawson has so far been sold by the club, with the defender joining Premier League side Watford.

There is just one year remaining on Phillips' deal at the Hawthorns, meaning this could be the Baggies final chance to cash in on him.

The verdict

This is an interesting one.

Phillips was someone who was able to make things happen for West Brom at times last season, so it may seem slightly strange to let the midfielder go after that demonstration of his ability if they are to compete for promotion again next season.

Even so, if Phillips is not going to be a regular feature under Bilic, then it does seem to make sense for West Brom to let him go now while they will still be able to get a fee for him, which will not be the case after his contract at the Hawthorns expires in 12 months time.

Given the discussion about the club's finances following their failure to win promotion back to the Premier League, you imagine they would prefer to raise funds from someone like Phillips than the free-scoring Jay Rodriguez should it be possible.
