Nigel Adkins rejection of a new contract would have come as a blow to Hull, but they have wasted little time in identifying his successor, with The Scottish Sun reporting that Paul Heckingbottom is in contention to take over.

Heckingbottom made a name for himself when he guided Barnsley to promotion in 2016 as caretaker manager of the club, despite The Tykes being 12th when he took over in February that season.

He then guided Barnsley to safety with ease in the following season, and as reward for his fine work he got the opportunity, which was short lasted after being sacked for winning just six of 14 games.

Currently at Hibs, he is not fairing too well, and would likely jump at the opportunity to return to Yorkshire.

He could be an ideal fit at Hull. In some ways a similar club to Barnsley, the financial restrictions imposed there means his best work will have to come on the training ground, which he is ready-made for.

In his short managerial career Heckingbottom has had varied success, but is yet to prove himself outside of Oakwell. So would he be a good appointment for Hull?

Our writers have their say.

Toby Wilding

"I'm not sure this would be a good appointment.

"Heckingbottom's time in the Championship has been far from consistent, and that could be a concern for a Hull side who are facing losing a number of key players in the summer, which could leave them looking over their shoulder next season.

"This certainly doesn't feel like the sort of appointment they should be making if they are looking to push on up the division."

Tommy Joyce

"Hull capturing Heckingbottom so soon after him joining Hibs would be a bit of a coup - especially considering the reasons why Adkins left.

"Despite being a fairly young manager who has only coached at three clubs, he has Championship experience, and bar his time at Leeds has been pretty successful.

"From his time at Barnsley and Leeds you can tell he enjoys bringing through youngsters and can work off a shoestring budget. This, naturally, will suit a Hull City side who don't have the resources compared to many of the other Championship clubs.

"While leaving Hibs now doesn't look the best for Heckingbottom, I think it could be a good move for him and is undoubtedly a step up from Hibs who work on a much tighter budget than Hull. He will have a point to prove after his failure at Leeds and it could be a good place to start.

George Brooks

"Heckingbottom is a good manager and he did a fantastic job with Barnsley a few seasons ago.

"His spell at Leeds was really disappointing though, although he should be able to get the best out of the Hull City players and could be a decent appointment for the Tigers.

"There are probably better options out there though and I like Paul Warne out of all the names mentioned so far.

"Even though there isn't long to go now until the start of pre-season, it's really important that Hull don't rush into a decision. They need to get this appointment right and must consider all their options carefully."
