Cardiff City became one of only four clubs to preserve their 100% record at the start of the fledgling Championship season, going top of the table in the process, with a comfortable 3-0 victory over Steve Bruce's Aston Villa, on Saturday afternoon.

A goal in each half for Nathaniel Mendez-Laing, which bookended a strike from winger Junior Hoilett, saw off Villa, who are still searching for their first league win of the season, as their poor away form, which dogged them last season, reared its head again at the Cardiff City Stadium.

Speaking after the match, Bluebirds boss Neil Warnock said, "It's why I'm in football really. Excitement, chances and saves, oohs and ahhs. I know Steve will be disappointed. We possibly played them at the right time because, with the quality they've got, he'll turn that around. But I'm delighted to get the three points. We competed well and we looked really sharp at times."

Cardiff fans reacted with quiet optimism, knowing full well that the early season table counts for nothing but enjoying their side's great start to the season, in which they are yet to concede a league goal.
