Sunderland slipped to a fourth defeat on the bounce by losing to Bradford City on penalties in the Papa John's Trophy last night but many Black Cats supporters have highlighted Nathan Broadhead for praise.

The rules of this year's Papa John's Trophy mean that defeat on penalties was enough to earn Lee Johnson's side the point they needed to win Northern Group F and secure a home tie in the knockout stages.

However, it continued a disappointing recent run for the Black Cats, who have now lost four in a row and five of their last six.

Johnson named a weakened team for the midweek tie, with Ross Stewart rested and Broadhead starting as the lone striker.

The Everton loanee did not disappoint and produced arguably his finest performance in a Sunderland shirt against Bradford.

As well as linking up well with his teammates and finishing with 89% pass accuracy, Broadhead added his second goal of the 2021/22 campaign with an immaculate touch and finish to pull his side level seven minutes into the second half.

A hamstring injury restricted the 23-year-old contributions in October but he looks to be back firing now, which is good news for Johnson and his squad.

He impressed the Stadium of Light faithful last night, with many supporters taking to Twitter to highlight his performance.
