Brentford midfielder Sergio Canos has signed a fresh contract which will keep him at Griffin Park until 2023, the club has confirmed.

The Spaniard first joined the club on a loan deal from Liverpool in the 2015/16 season, and he made such an impression that the Bees eventually decided to sign him on a permanent deal in January 2017.

Canos has been in favour ever since he re-joined the club with Dean Smith and now Thomas Frank both using him regularly on the wing to see him make 90 appearances since his 2017 move from Norwich.

He already had a deal at Griffin Park until the summer of 2021, but this now been extended until the summer of 2023 with Brentford also holding the option of a further year on top of this.

The Bees confirmed they had been in contract talks with Canos since the summer, while it has also recently emerged they turned down a £6.5million offer from Krasnodar to keep him at the club following the conclusion of last season.

In our latest FLW Rewind, we take a look back at the day Canos re-joined the Bees...

Brentford fans knew what to expect from Canos when he joined from Norwich following his successful loan spell in the 2015/16 season, and it would be fair to say the Spaniard has lived up to expectations since his permanent move.

The fact the Bees have decided to extend his deal reflects how valuable he is to Frank's side, with the 22-year-old having now started every game on the wing during Brentford's mixed start to the Championship season.

The West London side are currently sitting 17th in the table having only won three of their first 11 games, but Canos has been a key performer in these matches and has played a big role in creating many of Brentford's goals this term.

He has already registered three assists in the Championship this term, while his creativity from the flank has also meant he has made significant contributions in the build-up for several other Bees strikes.

Canos is perhaps enjoying the brightest patch of his career so far at Griffin Park. Brentford fans had every right to feel excitement when he joined on a permanent deal in 2017, and they'll now be hoping the new deal means he will be vital cog in the Bees' side for many more years to come.
