‘Best game for us’, ‘Brilliant’ – Many Derby fans impressed by one man after Barnsley draw

Derby County ended Barnsley’s seven-game winning run by holding them to a goalless draw at Oakwell yesterday and many Rams fans were left impressed by the performance of defender Teden Mengi.

The Manchester United loanee was one of a string of signings made by Derby late in the January window and started alongside Matt Clarke and George Edmundson in a back three last night.

The Tykes’ high-tempo and high-pressing game has caused serious issues for opposition sides over the last six weeks, helping them win seven on the bounce and climb into the top six, but Wayne Rooney’s side were able to keep them at bay last night.

They were helped by an impressive display from Mengi, who produced arguably his finest performance in a Derby shirt.

The 18-year-old won eight of his 13 defensive duels, blocked one shot, and made five clearances and four tackles (Sofascore).

Rooney heaped praise on the Man United loanee after the game and he wasn’t the only one, with parts of the Pride Park faithful clearly impressed as well.

Mengi has drawn some criticism in his first six weeks at the club but after last night’s game, many Rams fans took to Twitter to laud his performance.
