Reading FC have this morning moved to announce that Jaap Stam has left the Madejski Stadium with immediate effect.

The Royals took to their official website to make the announcement, with Stam leaving the Madejski less than 12 months after leading the club to within 90 minutes of a Premier League return.

Stam oversaw last season’s promotion push, helping Reading to Wembley, where Huddersfield Town beat them on penalties in the play-off final.

However, this season, Stam has struggled to replicate any similar kind of form, with Reading struggling for large parts.

Following Saturday afternoon’s 3-2 defeat to Norwich City at Carrow Road, Reading were looking nervously over their shoulder, with a relegation fight a real possibility during the run-in.

Stam departs Reading with the club in 20^th, just three points clear of Birmingham City who occupy the final relegation place ahead of the final eight fixtures of the season.
