His current deal was set to expire this summer but it was announced today by the club that they'd triggered the 12-month option in his contract.

Mowatt has made 101 appearances for the Yorkshire club since joining from Leeds United in January 2017 and was key as they secured promotion to the Championship last term, starting every single league game.

Speaking to the club website, Barnsley CEO Dane Murphy noted: "Alex Mowatt is a key member of Gerhard’s squad.

"The club have been clear in its intent to keep Alex at Oakwell longer than his current deal permits. Retaining his services for at least another season is significant."

The 25-year-old, who was handed the captain's armband earlier this season, revealed back in April that discussions had begun about a new long-term deal before the delay to the season.
