Benito Carbone has given his verdict on the importance of this weekend’s clash between Plymouth Argyle and Sheffield Wednesday.

The Italian spent three years playing for the Owls in the late 1990’s, making 107 appearances from 1996 to 1999.

Carbone believes that the top of the table clash will be the most important of the season for his former club.

Speaking with William Hill, the now 51-year old praised manager Darren Moore for his positive impact on the team and backed the team to get a result against the current league leaders.

The former forward has credited Moore with getting the best out of the first team squad.

“It’s definitely the most important game of the year so far,” said Carbone.

“The manager is clearly having a positive effect, and I think he will be able to motivate the team to win on Saturday.

“I hope they can win it.

“They just need to try and maintain their performance levels.

“Darren Moore should continue doing whatever he’s doing – I can see he is getting the best levels out of each player.”

The two teams will go into the weekend 1st and 2nd in the table respectively, with just three points separating the clubs.

Moore’s team do hold a game in hand, so victory could bring the two sides level but with a game fewer played for the Owls.

Wednesday have won their last five league games in a row, which has brought them within striking distance of Steven Schumacher’s side.

Both clubs will be looking to maintain their gap to the chasing pack, with Ipswich Town four points back in the race for automatic promotion from League One.

The Verdict

Moore has been getting the best out of this team in recent weeks, which has brought them back into contention for the top of the table.

The gap to Ipswich is paramount, but winning the title would also be a great achievement for the players and coaching staff.

Saturday’s clash could have a huge say in the destination of this year’s crown, as a Plymouth win could open up a six-point gap.

But Wednesday will believe they have the advantage given their form and the fact the game is being played on their home turf.
