The Daily Mirror has reported that Rafa Benitez has emerged as a contender to replace Arsene Wenger at Arsenal.

The Frenchman's contract is coming to an end when the 2016/17 season finishes and Arsenal appear reluctant to keep him on beyond the end of the season.

They have drawn up a list of manager targets and Newcastle United fans will be worried to hear that Benitez is on their radar.

The Spaniard stuck by the Magpies despite their relegation and he has led them to the top of the Championship with 16 games remaining.

They have a seven point gap over third placed Huddersfield Town so they look like they are in pole position to go up.

But a dispute over their lack of spending in January means that Benitez's head may be turned by speculation.

Newcastle would have the pick of their managers from the Championship if he does go, and here are 2 they should look at.

Garry Monk

Garry Monk is considered to be one of the brightest young English managers in the game.

He has revolutionised a Leeds side who have been struggling for over a decade and he has positioned them with a good platform to launch a promotion bid.

Leeds are currently 5th and if they don't go up and Newcastle do, the Magpies could look to poach him in the summer.

Jaap Stam

Another promising new manager is Jaap Stam of Reading.

Many doubted his appointment due to his lack of experience as a manager but the Dutchman has silenced his doubters by exceeding expectations and guiding Reading to 4th in the Championship.

His contract only lasts until the end of next season so he'd be a cheap option and - like Leeds - if Reading fail to get promoted and Newcastle do, then they could lose their manager to Newcastle.
