Championship outfit Newcastle United will be looking to return to winning ways this weekend when Birmingham City arrive at St. James’ Park, with the Magpies looking to get back on track after a 2-1 reverse at Nottingham Forest last Friday.

Having spent millions of pounds on players during the summer, the Magpies were expected to romp towards the Championship title and boss Rafa Benitez will be keen to ensure that his side’s standards don’t slip.

Despite spending such a hefty amount of money on players during the summer it is highly likely that boss Benitez will re-enter the transfer market when it opens for business in January.

Football League World writer Lee Clarke looks at three deals that Benitez should ask his board to secure this January, ahead of a final push towards the Championship title.

Alan Judge

The Brentford man has not played yet this season after suffering a broken leg at the back end of the last campaign, although the signs are that his return could be on the horizon.

Judge attracted Premier League interest last season and his signing could be a solid investment for the Magpies.

Judge is a matchwinner on his very best form and if Newcastle can get him fit and firing then the Republic of Ireland man could still play a part in their promotion push this season.

Hector Herrera

The Porto central midfielder has been on Rafa Benitez’s horizon and a January swoop could be on the cards.

The Mexican is a quality passer of the ball and he would certainly represent a stellar signing for a club currently playing in the second tier of English football.

The 26-year-old has fallen way down the pecking order at the Portuguese giants and the chance to eventually play in the Premier League makes Newcastle an attractive proposition.

Callum Wilson

The Bournemouth man has gone about proving his Premier League credentials in solid fashion this season, with the talisman netting his fifth goal of the campaign in Sunday’s 4-3 win over Liverpool.

Asking Wilson to drop into the Championship could be a tough task for Newcastle, although their title credentials might see him buy into the St. James’ Park project.

Wilson wouldn’t be a cheap signing and securing a deal for him in January might prove tricky. His arrival would almost certainly guarantee promotion for the Magpies come the end of the season.
