Blackpool defender Ben Heneghan has delivered a frank assessment on the Tangerines performance in their goalless draw against Bolton Wanderers at the University of Bolton Stadium on Monday night.

Heneghan, who enjoyed an impressive loan spell with Blackpool last season emerging as a fans' favourite towards the end of the campaign, re-joined the Tangerines on loan until January from Sheffield United in the summer and has been an important part of Simon Grayson's side promising start to the season helping the club concede just 13 league goals so far.

The defender was once again in commanding form against Bolton on Monday, helping the Tangerines record a fourth clean sheet in 12 league 1 matches, with Grayson's side managing to prevent Bolton from getting on the score sheet despite being put under pressure for some spells during the game.

However, despite Blackpool's strong defensive showing, the Tangerines lacked cutting edge in the final third and apart from an effort from Liam Feeney which came back off the crossbar they did not really do enough to score a goal that would have earned them a vital three points.

Speaking to Blackpool's official club website following the draw with Bolton, Heneghan suggested that the players need to show more if they are going to be able to start winning more tight contests, saying: "It wasn’t that entertaining (as a game) to be honest. We’re happy with the clean sheet, but we’ve got to create more. It’s as simple as that really."

"We’ve got to put demands on ourselves and other people throughout the squad. We all want to get up there in the league, so we’ve got to demand more and we’ve got to create. I think we had one shot on target, and that’s not good enough.

"We go into every game thinking we can win it. There’s no hiding from that, we want three points every single game. We expect it, and we’ve got to put that into action really and make it count on the pitch."

The Verdict

Heneghan is right to be demanding more of himself and his team-mates following the goalless draw against Bolton, which felt like a real missed opportunity for Blackpool, considering a win would have lifted them into third place just a point behind second placed Wycombe Wanderers.

However, in what is becoming something of a minor concern Blackpool fell to another draw in a tight match, their fifth in 12 matches so far this term, which is the joint most amount of draws in the league so far this term, and that is something the Tangerines will need to address if they are going to push on and mount a promotion bid.

As Heneghan alluded to Blackpool did not create anywhere near enough chances to earn a win against Bolton, and Grayson will be needing his attacking players to show more quality in the coming weeks if he is going to keep the cub challenging at the top of the division.
