Ben Garner has responded to an FA charge for his dismissal during Charlton Athletic’s dramatic 4-4 draw with Ipswich Town.

The Charlton boss has confirmed that the Addicks will not be appealing the decision by the FA to charge him for alleged improper language and/or behaviour.

The incident took place in the 53rd minute which led to him being sent off by the referee.

The 42-year-old has accepted the charge and has apologised for his actions during the fixture in October.

This is the first time that he has been on the receiving end of an FA charge, but has accepted the responsibility for his actions despite suggesting that the red card he received was not justified.

“It’s the first time I’ve ever been dismissed so it was a new experience, if you like," said Garner, via the club’s official website.

"I still don’t know what I was actually cautioned for and sent off for because, in my mind, I didn’t do anything untoward – there was no foul or abusive language and no aggression in what I said.

"But I have to take responsibility for my actions after that, so in terms of the charges brought against me I have to accept those and I have to learn from those.

“I just hope other people do the same in terms of their performance and what they did in the game, but as I say I accept responsibility for that.

“The flipside of that and the positive, if you like, is the strong connection with the supporters and the energy that moment created.

"The bond I felt with them during that moment was incredible, so on that side of things there are positives to take from it as well.”

Garner went on to reveal that he is unsure whether he will receive a touchline ban for the incident but claimed that it was a low-level offence so it may not warrant such punishment.

It was in the middle of a thrilling affair that saw his team recover a two-goal deficit against promotion-chasing Ipswich twice in one game.

Up next for Charlton is an FA Cup first round tie with Coalville United on 5 November.

The Verdict

It was a hectic game at the Valley some weeks ago, but Garner has reacted well to the incident.

No one can truly know what quite went down between the referees and Garner, but he has apologised for the incident and accepted responsibility.

A touchline ban could be on the cards, but we have seen managers be sent off and not receive that punishment already this season.

The club will be hoping that they can now move on from the whole affair with only a light punishment from the FA.
