Ben Garner is pleased with the signing of Steven Sessegnon to Charlton Athletic.

The 22-year old has joined the Addicks as part of a season long loan agreement with Premier League side Fulham.

That makes him the club’s fifth summer signing of the transfer window as Garner looks to build a competitive side for the League One season.

He joins the likes of Eoghan O’Connell, Mandela Egbo, Joe Wollacatt and Conor McGrandles as part of the team’s new recruits.

Sessegnon is a versatile player who can contribute as a full back on either flank, as well as covering various positions in midfield.

That kind of variety to his game will be what made this such an appealing signing to the new Charlton boss.

The 42-year old highlighted his intelligence and technical ability as two standout characteristics that he is excited to see come to the fore at the Valley over the course of the campaign.

"We are very happy to sign Steven and welcome him into our squad,” said Garner, via the club’s official website.

“He is capable of playing both on the left and right so gives us added quality, plus versatility.

“Steven is an athletic player with good football intelligence and technical quality. He is also ambitious and wants to help us be successful this season."

Charlton will be aiming for a more competitive season ahead having finished 13th in the third division table previously.

Johnnie Jackson has since departed as the team’s head coach, with Garner now taking on the role.

Bridging the 24 point gap to the top six will be a significant challenge, but one worth aiming for.

The team’s first game gets underway on July 30 with a trip away to Accrington Stanley.

The Verdict

This is a smart and exciting signing that will strengthen the team’s options.

Sessegnon has not quite been able to break through into the Fulham side, but is capable of being a top player in League One.

Gaining consistent game time has been exactly what he’s needed for a season or two now, so getting that chance with Charlton represents a great opportunity for him to prove to Marco Silva what he can do.

This move could be a launch pad to bigger things, but he will need to work hard to earn his place in the team on a regular basis.
