Noel Whelan has praised Leeds United for securing the services of manager Marcelo Bielsa for another season.

The Argentinian enjoyed a brilliant first season in English football with the Whites even though it ended in disappointment as Leeds missed out on promotion.

Despite that, the Yorkshire club convinced the former Chile boss to stay for another season and BBC pundit Whelan explained just how vital that was when speaking to Football Insider.

"It looks the best business we will do this summer. If you are not going to be spending on players, this looks the best signing we could possibly make.

"The manager was so important last season. He transformed the team by implementing a fluent and aggressive style that the players bought into, and many of them had the best season of their careers. He’s a brilliant manager and we’re lucky to have him."

The target for Bielsa will now be to strengthen his squad, although recent comments from owner Andrea Radrizzani suggest he won't be backed with significant funds to do that in the coming months.

The Verdict

You can't argue with anything that Whelan says here as Bielsa is without doubt the most important man at Elland Road.

He has shown he doesn't need the biggest budget to make Leeds contenders and was the reason they competed for promotion this season.

So, keeping him is brilliant news for Leeds and sorting his future out so early on means they can spend the next few months planning and working on identifying players to boost the squad.
