Leeds United full-back Barry Douglas has responded to a fan’s quip on Twitter alluding to his struggles at staying fit for the Whites over the past 18 months.

Having signed at the start of the 2018/19 season, Barry Douglas was one of Marcelo Bielsa’s first signings at the club and arrived with great prestige having been a huge part of Nuno Espirito Santo’s title-winning Wolves side from the season before.

His start at Elland Road got off to a flyer with three assists in his first 11 league games, before injuries plighted his season, to which he hasn’t fully recaptured his best form.

This season has been more of the same for Douglas who has struggled to gather any real momentum at left-back with niggling injuries keeping him sidelined for multiple brief periods, with his current problem seeing him miss the last two games.

After featuring on a video hosted by Leeds’ kit sponsor 32Red where he, Patrick Bamford and Barry Douglas took part in a ‘crossbar challenge’, one fan made a humorous comment outlining his surprise that Douglas managed to avoid injury in this video:

Having seen this reply, Douglas quickly moved to respond with his own humorous reply, saying that he too was surprised he could avoid injury for this video at Thorp Arch:

Can you remember the scoreline from Leeds' first 12 games this season?

The verdict

Douglas is well aware of the injury problems he has suffered whilst playing at Leeds, and it’s positive to see that he can reflect on a tough period with good humour.

The Whites have been struggling with a whole host of injuries in recent weeks and Douglas’ is just another in the long list.

The Scottish left-back will be hoping that he is available for when Leeds host Wigan Athletic on Saturday, especially after Gjanni Alioski’s lung-busting performance on Tuesday night against Millwall.

Players like Douglas will be a vital part of Marcelo Bielsa’s side as they edge closer to promotion, having had the experience of getting over the line in 2017/18, and regardless of his fitness, he will be an important part of the dressing room.
