Leeds' Barry Douglas has spoken to LUTV about the club's chances of success next season as well as commenting on the qualities of the new additions at the club.

Speaking after Leeds' first pre-season match, in which they defeated York 5-0, Douglas responded to the expectations on the club to challenge for promotion next season, and how he thinks he and his teammates will fair next season.

The Scot will be eager for the new season to start more than most, having been ruled out for the latter part of last season after damaging ligaments in his knee in a match against Millwall.

This season will also see him reunite with Helder Costa, whom he played with at Wolves and built up a successful partnership that led to the Championship title in 2018.

Speaking to LUTV, Douglas said: "Helder is a player who I know a lot about. He’s got amazing quality and it’s an amazing signing for the club. It’s going to keep everyone on their toes.

"We need that quality to push everyone to their limits.”

Following a successful season last year, Douglas believes the squad has proven what they're capable of and suggested they were unlucky to miss out on promotion last season.

Leeds are amongst the favourites for promotion this season and Douglas gave his response to suggestions that the club should be challenging once again.

"Again, going into this season nothing is a given. I don’t think we can see on paper who is going to be there. It’s all about who can be the most consistent.

"But the sooner we get going and play to our full potential I’m sure we can do well."

The Verdict

There is plenty to be positive about for Leeds next season, and a major reason for optimism is the signing of Helder Costa. It depends on how Bielsa utilises the Portuguese but he could team up with Douglas once again and the pair should be a threat to most Championship defences.

It is good to see optimism in the Leeds camp, as well as a sensible, level-headed outlook from Douglas. Bielsa has clearly installed confidence and belief in the camp without allowing them to get too carried away, which could be the perfect balance for success.
