Sheffield Wednesday captain Barry Bannan has hinted that he could be set to leave the Yorkshire club this summer.

Bannan was given the captain's armband at the start of last season and penned a new two-year deal midway through the campaign.

The Wednesday skipper was unable to help his side avoid relegation from the Championship, with significant off-field issues following their relegation.

Players have not been paid in full or on time for multiple months, while a behind-the-scenes review is set to happen.

Whether Bannan will be the man that leads out the Owls on their first game of the 2021/22 League One season appears to be in doubt, with the Scotsman dropping hints about a potential summer exit.

Speaking to BBC Radio Scotland, he discussed the situation at the Yorkshire club and certainly didn't ease any fears about a potential exit.

"It has been tough," explained Bannan. "Last year was a hard year for us. With the points deduction, we were on the backfoot straight away.

"We ended up getting relegated which is never great at any part of your career especially when you're a bit older as well.

"I've got two years left, I signed a new deal there last season. We'll just see what happens, I think we start back on Friday. I'm just looking forward to getting back, I'm keeping myself fit.

"Go back and see what happens from there. It's a bit up in the air at the minute, there's a lot of people leaving behind the scenes and so it's not a great place to be at the minute.

"But once I get back in on Friday and have talks, I'll find out what I'm going to be doing next season."

Wednesday have already seen a significant chunk of their senior squad depart at the end of their contracts, while Darren Moore is unable to add reinforcements at the moment due to a transfer embargo.

The Verdict

Wow. These comments from Bannan seem to suggest that a summer departure from Hillsborough could well be on the cards.

The Scottish midfielder has not been universally popular among Wednesday fans in recent years but he could be vital to their chances of getting back out of League One.

The tone with which is remarks were delivered was not that of a player that is hoping to stay at the Yorkshire club, so it's going to be very interesting to see how things develop over the next few weeks.
