Barnsley are reportedly set to offer Leeds United defender Tom Pearce a pay rise and a long-term deal to tempt him away from Elland Road.

The Tykes have already signed two players from their Yorkshire rivals this summer, with winger Mallik Wilks and defender Aapo Halme both having made the switch.

The newly-promoted side are reportedly also keen to add Pearce before the transfer window closes, with Leeds understood to be open to offers for him.

According to Football Insider, Barnsley are prepared to offer the left-back a pay rise and a long-term deal to encourage him to make the move to Oakwell this summer.

The report suggests that the 21-year-old is set to be offered either a four-year deal or a three-year deal with the option of a fourth year.

A product of the Leeds academy, Pearce made his debut for the club in 2018 and has gone on to feature 10 times for the senior side.

Five of those came in the first half of last season before he was sent out on loan to Scunthorpe United in January, making nine appearances for the League One side.

The defender signed a new four-year deal at Elland Road last summer but he has not been involved for Marcelo Bielsa in pre-season and it appears his career at the club could be coming to an end.

The Verdict

This could be a good signing for Barnsley and one that is on-brand with much of their business this summer.

Daniel Stendel has continued to build a youthful squad, adding nine players under 24 already in the transfer window.

It would be interesting to see where Pearce will slot in for the Tykes, with Dani Pinillos and Ben Williams the two left-backs already in the squad.

The defender doesn’t seem to be in Bielsa’s plans, so it would make sense for Leeds to look to cash in.

He is unlikely to fetch a huge fee but it is money that could be reinvested if the deal is done quickly.
