It's safe to say that it's been a frustrating season for Barnsley and the club's supporters, as they struggled to stay afloat in the Championship this term.

The Tykes are currently sat bottom of the second tier standings, and are seven points adrift of safety with just nine league games remaining this season.

However, that survival bid has been put on hold for the time being due to recent off-the-field events, with no scheduled return date being put in place as of yet.

There has been rumours of a potential voiding of the season, although there has also been talk of the season getting back underway later this year.

One Barnsley player that has been a rare bright spark this season for Gerhard Struber's side is Conor Chaplin, who has 12 goals and five assists in his 38 appearances for the Tykes this term.

Speaking in an interview with the Yorkshire Post, Chaplin hinted that he'd rather finish the season when safe to do so, and not have it voided, before also admitting that he disagrees with former manager Paul Cook.

"You do want to do stuff on merit, 100 per cent. (Although) We fall into that little per cent that would benefit.

"I was listening to one of my ex-managers Paul Cook and he said that there were teams like Charlton who have been in the relegation zone for twenty minutes of the season and literally have just gone into it and would it then be fair to say they would be relegated (now)?"

"It obviously wouldn't be as they have not been near the relegation zone for the majority of the season."

The Verdict:

He raises a valid point about the conclusion of this year's campaign.

It would be hugely unfair if they voided the season and relegated the teams in currently in the bottom-three, especially as there is still plenty of time for the second tier standings to change this term.

Chaplin and Barnsley will know that they need to show improvement in their results when they do return to action, or they'll be heading straight back into League One.
