Barnsley are on the brink of beginning a new era with Markus Schopp in charge as their new head coach at Oakwell.
The Austrian arrives in Yorkshire with big shoes to fill after taking on the role that was vacated by Valerien Ismael after the Frenchman departed for West Bromwich Albion.
He inherits a young and exciting team which head into the 2021/22 campaign off the back of a brilliant season just gone that ultimately ended in Sky Bet Championship play-off heartbreak as they lost out to Swansea City in the semi finals.
Never the less, the Tykes will be looking to go again under their new man at the helm and it is sure to be an interesting summer ahead at Oakwell.
The higher or lower Barnsley transfer fee quiz – can you get 20/20?
Here, we take a look at THREE transfer situations that the club will want sorted before the season starts in under a month’s time…
Secure Alex Mowatt replacement
After seeing Mowatt follow Ismael down the road to West Brom, the Tykes are sure to be keen to secure a midfield replacement who can have the same sort of impact as their former captain.
They are sure to miss the former Leeds United man’s goals and creativity from the centre of the park, which means they will have to identify an almost like for like signing that can be made to fill that void.
Callum Styles is certainly a man who could move into the centre to fill that role, although much of that will depend on the formation that Schopp looks to play.
Whatever the solution, it is a problem which needs sorting.
Sign Jamie McCart
The Tykes are said to be interested in signing McCart from St Johnstone this summer, as per a recent report by The Scottish Sun.
Sheffield Wednesday, Sunderland, Nottingham Forest, Hibernian and Belgian club Royale Union Saint-Gilloise are all also said to be interested in the centre back.
The 24-year-old was a standout performer for the Saints as they lifted both the League and Scottish Cups last term and could well be on the move over the next few weeks.
Signing the impressive defender will surely be high up on the club’s list of priorities moving forwards.
Bring in Ethan Erhahon
Barnsley are also said to be eyeing a move for the St Mirren midfielder this summer, as per a another report by The Scottish Sun.
The talented 20-year-old previously had a stint on loan at Oakwell earlier in his career and it appears that the Tykes are lining up a £250,000 bid for the Scottish youth international.
Erhahon does however have two years remaining on his current contract north of the border, which means Barnsley may have to pay over that figure to get their man.
The youngster could be the Mowatt replacement that they are looking for.
