Valerien Ismael may have left Barnsley to take charge at West Bromwich Albion but with the start of the Championship season now six weeks away, the Tykes are wasting no time finding a replacement.

Reports on Sunday indicated that Markus Schopp, currently in charge of Austrian Bundesliga side TSV Hartberg, is being lined up to take charge at Oakwell.

Whoever the new manager is will likely want to mould their squad via the transfer window before the season gets underway.

With that in mind, here is the latest Tykes transfer news...

Barnsley miss out on midfield target

The Tykes were one of a number of EFL clubs reportedly interested in midfielder Ryan Tunnicliffe after his Luton Town departure but they have now missed out on the 28-year-old.

Portsmouth announced on Saturday that Tunnicliffe had signed a two-year deal at Fratton Park, with the South Coast club having the option of a further year.

It appears Barnsley will now have to look elsewhere if they're to reinforce their midfield this summer.

Alex Mowatt's future in doubt

It appears Barnsley could be set to lose captain Alex Mowatt, with Ismael said to be keen to make him his first signing as West Brom head coach.

The midfielder has been a key figure at Oakwell over the past three seasons but his contract is set to expire this summer.

Mowatt has been offered new terms by Barnsley but, according to the Express & Star, Albion are now the favourites to sign him.

Other Championship clubs are understood to be interested in the 26-year-old.

Kareem Hassan-Smith signs first professional deal

One player that will be staying on at Oakwell is 18-year-old defender Kareem Hassan-Smith, who signed has signed his first professional deal with the Yorkshire club.

The Tykes announced on Friday that Hassan-Smith had penned the milestone contract after impressing for the U18s and U23s last season.

The teenager, who is now contracted at Oakwell until 2023, is said to be an explosive right-sided player that is comfortable as both a full-back and a wing-back.
