Barnsley look set to snap up Brentford defender Alfie Mawson, reports the Sheffield Star.

The 21-year-old centre-back has recently left the Bees after turning down the opportunity to sign a new two-year-deal with the club, citing his lack of game time could effect his progression.

Mawson had recently just returned from a successful loan spell with League Two side Wycombe Wanderers, who narrowly missed out on promotion to League One by losing on penalties in the final to Southend United.

The talented defender made over 50 appearances for Wycombe last season, scoring seven goals, and was a main feature in Gareth Ainsworth’s side.

Barnsley boss Lee Johnson is very keen to sign Mawson as he looks to strengthen his defence for the upcoming season.

After losing skipper Martin Cranie after the expiration of his contract, Johnson has gone on to secure experienced defender Lewin Nyatanga on a two-year extension and has recruited former AFC Halifax Town centre-back Marc Roberts on a three-year deal.

Johnson is set to carry on his current recruitment process by securing young talent to add to his side, as the club look to challenge for promotion back to the Championship.

Mawson, who won Wycombe’s Player’s Player of the Year and Supporters Player of the Year last season is said to be hot property this summer, with Swindon Town, Millwall and Yorkshire rivals Bradford City all looking to secure the talented defender.

Barnsley fans, would you like to see Mawson join the club? Who’s your perfect replacement for Cranie? Have your say at FLW in the comments below.
