Barnsley have submitted a £500,000 bid for New Zealand and Viking FK midfielder Joe Bell, as reported by Mail Online.
The 22-year-old, who currently operates in Norway’s top division, is a full New Zealand international, making his debut during a 3-1 loss against Ireland in 2019.
Bell signed for Viking in January 2020, penning down a three-year contract with the Norwegian arrival.
In his debut season for Viking, Bell featured 29 times in the league, starting 21 of those matches. He netted twice and provided a further three assists during that campaign.
This year, he has appeared 13 times thus far for the Eliteserien outfit, assisting four goals from a holding midfield position.
The Tykes have welcomed four fresh faces to Oakwell this summer, and whilst they have already added a central midfielder in Josh Benson, it appears that they are in pursuit of strengthening their midfield options even further.
Losing Alex Mowatt was always going to leave a massive void in the middle of the park, and whilst Benson offers a lot of quality and promise, recruiting another young, hungry midfield operator will provide some healthy competition.
£500,000 seems like a bargain for the New Zealand international.
He has been a regular in Norway’s top division for over two years, and he also has international experience to his name.
If a deal goes through, then Barnsley could have potentially picked up a gem in Bell. He is still 22 years old and there is scope for him to continue to grow, and within a team like Barnsley, where bright, attacking football is prioritised, then he could thrive at Oakwell.
