St Mirren manager Jack Ross has turned down the opportunity to become the new head coach of Championship side Barnsley, instead committing himself to the division-leading Buddies.

The Tykes have been without leadership since the departure of Paul Heckingbottom to Leeds United last week, with permission given by the Scottish Championship side to speak to their boss earlier this week.

However St Mirren confirmed that, despite providing the 41-year-old permission to speak with the Oakwell side, the former Hartlepool United defender has opted to see out the project underway at St Mirren Park.

Leading the Scottish second tier by fourteen points, Ross has emerged as one of the most promising young bosses in British football, with Barnsley keen to speak with budding managers rather than experienced bosses.

However their search for a new manager is now likely to continue into a second week.

The Verdict

If Ross was Barnsley’s number one target, this will be quite a difficult rejection to handle.

Yes Ross’ St Mirren side look destined for the SPL, a dream for the young manager, the opportunity to manage in England should have been enough to convince the gaffer of a switch.

However Buddies fans will be delighted their beloved boss is staying, leaving Barnsley in serious trouble as they look to escape the bottom three on Tuesday evening against relegation rivals, Burton Albion.
