In their first season back in the Championship, Barnsley had a solid season, finishing comfortably in the safety of mid-table and in truth, they were never threatened by relegation at all.

Paul Heckingbottom masterminded a remarkable season for the Tykes, who at one point looked like they could make an unlikely push for the Play-Offs, but in the end, they fell well short.

Barnsley have had some great players at their disposal throughout the season, but in January, their season hopes were dashed as Conor Hourihane and Sam Winnall both departed for pastures new.

The Tykes are at risk of losing more players in the summer, centre-half duo, Angus MacDonald and Marc Roberts both being linked with moves away.

Heckingbottom struggled to replace Sam Winnall in January, but summer gives him a better chance to assess the situation properly and make sure he brings in the right man.

Who should be the man to replace Winnall? Danny Ward of Rotherham.

Ward had a fine season for relegated Rotherham last season, netting 11 goals and assisting a further four, a very good return for a team that only scored 40 goals in the whole season.

There is no doubting that the Millers hitman knows where the net is, and in a more creative side, he could easily double that goal tally.

If Barnsley are to improve again next season, it is vital that they properly replace Winnall, and with losing Adam Armstrong too, they may also need another striker.

With Rotherham being relegated from the Championship, Barnsley should be able to attract Ward, as the lure of Championship should be too much for Ward to turn down.

There will no doubt be quite a few clubs baying for Ward's signature, but Barnsley should jump to the front of the queue and get the deal done quickly.
